With the sesquicentennial on the horizon, it is imperative to make sure what is being taught in the classroom is accurate and true. The setting for Pink and Say is somewhere in Georgia

HISTORICAL FICTIONThis is a wonderfully illustrated picture book that tells an account of the Civil War through the eyes of a soldier. Say was wounded in a field when Pink found him and carried him for many miles to his mother's house. His mother, Moe Moe Bay, was such a kind and loving woman. She treated Say like her own son and even comforted him when he admitted that he had been shot when he was running away from his troop. This moment in the story sheds light on how young the soldiers were
A children's picture book remembering Pinkus Aylee, a colored boy in the Union Army who saved another. My TakeOh, I just wanted to cry throughout the story...and unfortunately, I got my "wish" at the end. It's a tale that has had many permutations throughout war, and this one is of two 15 year olds fighting for their own reasons. Whew, Polacco doesn't pull any punches in this when Pinkus meets up with Say and gives it to him straight. Reasonable, but, whoa. A nice bit of history for the kids with
In this powerfully written and illustrated picture book by gifted storyteller Patricia Polacco, readers are taken back to the Civil War. Sheldon Curtis (Say) is lying near a Southern battlefield. When Pinkus Aylee finds him, he carries the wounded boy back to his mother's house. She nurses him back to health, and the two boys become friends. Tragedy strikes, and as they're on their way back to join the Union troops, they are captured by Confederate troops and separated once they reach a camp for
3.5 stars. Such a sad story. As you might expect from a Patricia Polacco book, this is uplifting and gives you hope in human nature and it is heartbreakingly sad and makes you despair too.The American Civil war is something I know very little about, this gives you a taste of what it was like for young people having to fight. This is a good picture book for those wanting an introduction to this period of history from a personal point of view. I do love these personal stories Patricia Polacco has

I do love these personal stories Patricia Polacco has from her family, a lot of amazing stories where passed on to Patricia and she is a great storyteller, one that takes you on an emotional roller coaster. One reviewer that seems to have done a lot of research into these characters seems to think this is fiction, who knows, but for me this was still a great story about the hideous waste of young people at war or the pain any war causes. This is a very sad book and definitely aimed at older readers and not for a sensitive reader. Read on open libraryIdentify Books As Pink and Say

I really loved this book that I read for historical fiction. This book is a pretty quick read but within those pages is a beautiful, moving story. It was very hard not to cry when I was reading this. This book is amazing and I have no doubt that I will recommend and use it as a read aloud some day. I think that even though it is a picture book, I would still read it aloud in fifth grade. For a teaching idea, in fifth grade, students learn about the civil war in the fourth quarter.
